Hendersonville wildlife control Tip of the Month:

Inspecting your house for bat entry holes
Bats are quite the mammals. They sleep hanging upside down. Control insect population, mostly mosquitoes. Are nocturnal like owls. But they cross the line when they choose to roost inside people's house. Even if it is the attic, where people rarely go. You don't just barge into people's house houses and claim it as your own. What are they mafia or something?  Don't even get me started on the pooping problem. Bats rarely roost alone. If there was one before, there might be a whole colony now. And all they'll give you is an accumulating pile of poop and a damp and smelly attic floor from urine. But how do they get in?

How do bats get in?
Most bats that may claim your house are the smaller breeds. They can squeeze into tiny places. Contrary to many beliefs and rumors, bats cannot chew through metal, wood, plastic or anything in that regard. Unless its paper thin of course.  They will use the already existing hole and gaps left by rats, squirrels and many other animals that can infest your house. If not then your house must have some loose fittings or boards or even damaged ventilators of the chimney. Bats are not capable of gnawing in their way. But be wary when looking. Bats can even get in through gaps as small an inch square.

How do we go about inspecting?
When you want to start inspecting your property for possible entry spots. Take a seat and try to think of every bat could be. Bats like to roost in the dark in warm places. Well of course. No one wants to sleep in the cold with a bright light on your face. Most likely suggestions are attics or basements. Survey all these places in the morning. The light will most probably shine through gaps, holes or damaged structures.  You might even see some bats hanging or flapping around on your arrival. Follow those noises. Bats will leave their poop any and everywhere. So there will be some accumulation where they roost. A bat's odor cannot be mistaken for some other creature. It is very distinctive.

What next?
Once all the spots have been found use bat exclusion devices to exclude bats from the property. After that start bat proofing, your house. Use caulking in places gaps have developed. Tightly nail in loose boards. Close-off all gaps and holes using pieces of wood, metal or mesh netting.

Why not use traps?
Bats are our natural insect control system. They can consume up to 600 insects an hour. With this, the insanely fast insect reproduction can be countered. For this commendable work, bats are protected internationally. People cannot own bats; they don't do well in contact with humans. It terrifies them; they feel imprisoned. You cannot knowingly destroy an existing colony. Trapping bats require special permits. Most traps can harm bats because like bird their bones are hollow. Any harm to bats can cause you to fill a hefty fine. Killing or extensive harm might take you to you, lawyer, because you might be going to jail.
